"If you've spent any time surfing the Usenet newsgroups, you've come across uuencoded files. Being Macintosh people, we usually think of "binhex" when we think about converting files into ASCII text for easy transmission through non-Macintosh servers and mailers. Well, the rest of the world uses an old Unix standard called "uucode"; and this is the standard which has been adopted by the Usenet newsgroups that allow binary postings. uucd is a freeware uuencoder/uudecoder that is the best that I've seen for the Macintosh. It is small and fast. It supports standard drag and drop on its Finder icon and drag and drop directly from the Finder into its window (for those with System 7.5 or later). It automatically strips headers and footers from text files which you load (which is a godsend when you have a file divided into 34 segments). It allows easy, visual drag and drop rearrangement of the files within its window, and graphically demonstrates which are beginning, middle and end pieces of an archive. Drop a folder full of files, rearrange them into the proper order, and then save the whole batch with one button. It also will automatically assign whatever creator you want on files lacking the originating application information. For encoding, uucd will automatically segment a file according to the line limit that you have specified in the preferences. The only thing lacking in the uuencoding is the number of segments: it suffixes with 1, 2, 3; not 1/3, 2/3, 3/3. Despite this minor drawback, uucd is an essential tool for any Internet surfer." ---- Philip Dyer, MacDownload
